The star of Blade 2 and Hellboy 2 checks in with 411mania.com for an exclusive interview to talk about his new movie Blood Out.

Actor Luke Goss burst into theatres in 2002 in Blade 2, where he portrayed the reaper vampire Nomak to battle Wesley Snipes as Blade. Goss would later appear in the action-comedy The Man starring Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy and more recently as Frankenstein in Death Race 2 and Steve Fox in the live action movie for Tekken based on the hit videogame franchise. His new starring role is in the movie Blood Out which also stars Val Kilmer, Vinnie Jones, 50 Cent, and AnnaLynne McCord. Goss plays a small town sheriff trying to get to the bottom of his brother’s death. Goss took time out of his schedule to speak with us last week about his career and the new movie:

Jeffrey Harris: What can you tell us about your role in Blood Out and the great group of talent in the movie including Val Kilmer, Vinnie Jones, 50 Cent, and Anna-Lynne McCord?

Luke Goss: Yeah it’s a good bunch of people. It was one of those movies where everyone in the cast and the crew knew what we were getting into . . . it was going to be guerrilla style in the sense that we were trying to shoot not much over two weeks. I think sixteen, seventeen shoot days, something like that; pretty quick . . . It was a lot to pull off in a short amount of time. I think we pulled out a cool, little movie.

Jeffrey Harris: Originally you started off as a singer and musician, how did you transition over to acting for your career?

Luke Goss: I mean luckily I started when I was seventeen years old. I was actually a drummer. People say I was a singer; I was actually a drummer in a band. I think my agent thought it was a pretty good plan, but I just found myself not feeling comfortable with it. I just didn’t feel like I was getting enough out of it. And we did pretty well; we started punching millions of hours around the world. But I did this theatre show with a director called Maria Calzone, who offered me my first lead role. I fell in love with it, four and a half years of theatre in London, two and a half years in the West End. But then I did this movie about a drug addict called Two Days, Nine Lives directed by the late director Simon Monjack and fell in love with film. I was only – I was pretty young like 25-26 years old. So I did theatre for about four and a half years and did my first feature. And it got good reviews in the London times and then I came to LA and after a lot of auditions I got cast in Zig Zag which was David Goyer’s directing debut. And then Blade 2.

Jeffrey Harris: I’d really call Blade 2 your breakout role where you played the villain Nomak opposite Wesley Snipes. Was it your association with David Goyer from Zig Zag that got the interest for you in the role?

Luke Goss: Absolutely. Yeah, he called [Guillermo] del Toro from what I understand and said, “I think I may have found our Nomak.” And so I got the script for Blade 2, and I sat with del Toro after feverishly reading the page. And he knew that on the page the lines I could say were very minimal, but he wanted not an audition but to sit and talk about the character and what my thoughts on Nomak were. And I made up a couple of things. I thought the father and son issues could be pretty tight and I came up with the idea of the ring. I don’t know if you remember, but there was a ring of the movie that was the proof of who we were. And I said, “there is no proof, I could just be the psychotic guy,” and a number of other things that we spoke about and I got offered the part about eight weeks later they offered me the role. And I just wanted to make a character that people can’t see the actor, that way people could believe Nomak was as real as possible. So I isolated myself from the rest of the cast and I tried to create a role that would last. And like you said, I think that was the role that certainly got a few into what I was trying to do.

Jeffrey Harris: What was it like working with a tremendous director like Guillermo del Toro on that movie?

Luke Goss: I can be very, very intense on set, but he knows for me, he’s only coming from a place where I consider what I’m doing. And I think without a doubt he’s the most prepared director I’ve ever worked with. I think having seen the way he works, he was more human in the first film. There was a lot more humanity as far as friendship is concerned, but I do still think his attention to detail never went down. He’s still that amazing director and I think just getting better and stronger. Definitely, I loved his sense of humor on the first movie. He has such a great sense of humor and a great sense of boyish enthusiasm about that genre and as the way all of us do love those kinds of movies. And he just was a joy to be assisted by – del Toro saves you from yourself. He has so much faith in what his actors are bringing because he knows why he’s got each actor on set. There’s no guess work with him. But what he does is he saves you from the choices that might divert the power of the role and I think he just really keeps actors on track more than dictating them. I love, love working with him.

Jeffrey Harris: Aside from all the recent controversy on Wesley Snipes, what was it like to work opposite him in the movie and have action sequences with him? How did he come off to you?

Luke Goss: Firstly, I get along really well with him. We just clicked and when we were doing the promotional tour together when the movie came out, the cast members were just him and I. We were in a private jet going around the country for about two and a half weeks promoting the film. So we came out here with a great rapport and I really enjoyed working with him. At the time we were shooting, he was at the height of his game as far as Mr. Snipes, you know what I mean? Wesley Snipes on his A game. So that comes with, you know you have bodyguards and the kind of – some of the things that come with that. But he’s amazing at what he does as far as fighting. He’s really a powerful guy. I think it was good for me as far as movement-wise and attitude, I try to make sure of little things like keeping my guard down with Snipes so it wasn’t like I was defending myself. It was like if I hit something, I can even look away because if Nomak hits something, it’s going down whether it be for a second or forever, it’s going to go down. And it was a wonderful payoff because he’s such a powerful adversary – it really helped in a way in a portrayal of a badass too. And he was cool to say, “I want him to kick my ass longer because the longer I get my ass kicked, when I come back and save the day, then I have a genuine victory.” And I think that’s really smart for any hero to say in a film. You’re only as good as the person you beat.

Jeffrey Harris: Another Blade 2, another big movie you were in was The Man opposite Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy. It was more of a buddy/action comedy this time. How did you like working with Samuel L. Jackson and a funnyman like Eugene Levy?

Luke Goss: Eugene was an amazing guy. He’s as lovely as you’d hope to be and a nice person. Zero badass for sure, but an absolute sweetheart of a guy. Really lovely person. Same with Sam. I’ve been a fan of Sam for years. So I was doing this scene where we were doing this face-off. And like our wrists are touching, gun to gun, facing off to each other, two weapons. I’m looking down at the weapon and looking at Samuel L. Jackson. And we were on camera just getting our focus points and stuff like that – “You’re Samuel L. Jackson, aren’t you?” And because we knew each other beforehand and were hanging out before that. But I just saw this stare and it just tickled me. I was thinking, “**** man look at that.” I just thought it was cool. He laughed. He thought it was funny.

Jeffrey Harris: So it must be nice not having to wear as much make-up for a film like Blood Out right?

Luke Goss: I think I’d do makeup now for del Toro but I can’t imagine that I’d be wearing makeup for anyone else. Because with del Toro you know you are going to achieve greatness with him. But yeah I really am in the business now of not wearing the makeup because it’s just too exhausting and also on a professional level . . . you find yourself in these number one movies and you don’t have any face value which is inevitably what gets you the better roles. And so I just want to stick with – I’ve got what I’ve got on my face; people either love it or hate. But I want I don’t be the guy put in the role rather than – I don’t want to do the makeup, but I guess for del Toro I would do it again.

Jeffrey Harris: That said, I thought Prince Nuada in Hellboy 2 was a great antagonist and character. He was more than just bad guy. He had these intense scenes where he showed in some ways he is a righteous and justified character. In Nuada’s own mind, he’s the hero of the fairy tale and fable realm that’s being destroyed by humanity.

Luke Goss: I get very excited when I hear – and it’s not an ego thing at all – but I get very excited when I hear someone or a journalist discussing and telling me about him. Because it means that you give a **** and you’ve considered it and you are listening to what he’s saying and watching his actions. I remember saying something to del Toro, I said, “When he fights or when he’s doing this thing you have to remember, he’s not standing up there with his nose looking down.” And I guess that’s the one thing I was very adamant about as an actor, was that I don’t want to have him look down and look up to the individuals like metaphorically speaking. Because this character is like a prince looking down his nose, but everything he does – he’s going to butt heads in the movie. People will want him dead. I said, “He’s not happy about any of this. This is something he has to do. And it gives him great pain.” So just the adjustment of lowering head and thinking of looking up at people with a kind of sense of constant sorrow, I think people related to him. And I think it was great that you said it was kind of a just cause. Because certainly the way that humans were portrayed in the movie, “take, take, take, take until there is nothing left.” And when he [Nuada] said, “Where is the honor in this?” I think it was one of those scenes where you generally question, where is the honor? I think honor is only in the action, but there’s nothing honorable about the environment. The only honor was left from my father and it was failed honor because it inevitably it would kill his people. And I think honor cannot be reached out to then where you let the demise of your people. That’s not leadership. He [Nuada] understood his father’s intentions but they were misplaced because they had become obsolete and if they had carried on much longer there would be none of them left.

Jeffrey Harris: I remember you were announced by Top Cow as being in a movie for The Magdalena based on the comic. And they were giving out promotional posters. Do you know if that project will ever still go off?

Luke Goss: We [Goss and Jenna Dewan] are the two people attached to the project, but I think because of the financial climate I’m guessing and because of the raising funds, I believe it’s still ongoing. And I know that I’m attached to the project for sure as the male lead in the film and she is The Magdalena and would be the lead in that story. Gale Anne Hurd [the projec's producer], she is just a great, great, great producer. So I’m sure if anyone can get that thing done I think that it would be her.

Jeffrey Harris: In your action movies, you have fight scenes and stunt scenes, but in real life do you study any type of disciplines or martial arts?

Luke Goss: You know what, I haven’t. When I was doing Blade, literally they got me to Prague nine weeks before to do physical training as far as the costume stuff but actually just physically learning to fight like that. And I’d done some karate as a kid at best, but I was literally 5-6 hours a day, 6 days for 9 weeks for Blade. And for Hellboy I was training for 11 weeks for that film. I don’t know what belt I would be after 11 weeks or 9 weeks, but I did a movie with Michelle Yeoh, probably one of my least favorite movies I ever made, but I was in China in Shanghai taught by the Chinese for about 3 weeks. And then when I did Death Race, I was in a fight cage doing all the UFC stuff for about two and a half weeks in Africa. So I think what happens is it all kind of adds up and you learn a lot of techniques. And I try to do roles that – I’m not trying to purport to be the martial artist or that I’m just a guy trying to do fighting styles that are feasible for say you and I opposed to setting myself up as badass martial artist because I’m not a martial artist. I just work really hard with each character to try and pull off an authentic style that would be relevant to them.

Jeffrey Harris: What’s a cool action scene in the Blood Out movie?

Luke Goss: I’m on a roof and I really am on the roof. It’s funny because – like there’s this big explosion in Death Race where some reviewer had said, “courtesy of green screen.” I’m thinking, “that massive, huge fireball was about twenty feet behind me. So trust me, no green screen there.” And then there’s a scene in Blood Out where I’m on the roof of a car and absolutely going 60 miles an hour going down seven city blocks trying to get Vinnie [Jones] from taking my brother’s fiancée. I’m on the roof of that thing and I didn’t have any stunt doubles – there are no cables there. That’s me doing it, making it happen, with the help of course from mainly stunt guys but I’m doing it for myself for that reason. So that we get the shot.

Jeffrey Harris: Thanks so much for your time and I’m looking forward to what you are doing next.

Luke Goss: Thanks for the support. It means a great deal.

Luke Goss will soon be going to Hong Kong for the movie Chennai Heist which he will starring in, writing, and producing. Blood Out is now available in stores on DVD and Blu-ray.

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011
Although I can no longer recall with any certainty the first time I saw the name “Luke Goss” in the credits of a film, I can still remember my reaction: I executed a full-fledged double-take and thought, “Surely not the same Luke Goss who used to be a member of Bros…?”

Indeed it was.

Now, mind you, if you weren’t living in Europe or Australia during the late ’80s and/or early ’90s, it’s quite possible that you have no recollection of Goss’s early years as a pop star…which, all things being equal, is probably how he would prefer it, as he’s done an admirable job of leaving his music career behind, carving himself a nice little niche as a bit of an action star. But even in the midst of discussing his latest film, “Blood Out” (now on DVD), in which he co-stars with 50 Cent, Vinnie Jones, and Val Kilmer, there was never any chance that I wasn’t going to bring up Bros.

Ironically, though, it was Goss himself who gave me the perfect opening, and we had a good laugh about his pop star past during the course of our very pleasant chat, which also included discussion of his experiences working with Eugene Levy and Steven Seagal, the success of his American accent, the frustration of seeing one’s films go straight to video, and the challenges of achieving career longevity in such a climate.

(Fair warning: not to blatantly pimp my past work, but for a fuller picture of Goss and his career, it may behoove you to check out our 2008 conversation…partly because it’s referenced several times during this conversation, but mostly just because the man gives great interviews.)

Popdose: First of all, I don’t have any idea that you’d remember, but you and I have actually talked before, way back when “Hellboy 2” hit DVD.

Luke Goss: I thought so, actually! I recognized the names of several of the people I was going to be speaking to. It’s nice to be able to talk to people more than once, because it starts to feel more like you’ve having a regular chat.

So when I watched “Blood Out,” you probably won’t be surprised that one of the first things that jumped out at me was that you were doing an American accent.

Yeah, and…I did that for ““Death Race 2” as well, didn’t I?

I believe you did. How hard was it for you to cultivate the accent?

Well, I did a lot of theater when I was younger. When I first got into acting, I did four and a half years of theater before I did any film, and I… (Hesitates, then laughs) Uh, this is not in keeping with the kind of roles I’m doing now, but I did Danny Zucco in “Grease” in the West End in London. That’s a different kind of accent, of course, but when I did “Death Race 2,” it was funny, ‘cause I went into the editing suite, where they were doing all the sound design and stuff, and the guys were, like, “Hey, are you English?” I said, “Yeah.” They said, “Fuck, man, I didn’t know you were English!” ‘Cause they’d been watching me for God knows how many weeks, but I’m on set and I don’t break character, so I was American even when I was talking to people on the set. So they were surprised. But I like doing it. I think also if you keep mixing it up…like, I meet people who don’t know so much about me and some people who do, but the people that don’t are, like, “Are you English or American?” And I think that’s a good question at that point.

With “Blood Out,” you’ve got a revenge flick, which automatically equals lots of action…

(Laughs) It goes hand in hand, right?

It does. But as a Brit, can you speak to the handling differences between a baseball bat and a cricket bat?

Mate. Why do you think I live here (in the States)? The cricket bat can go head off into the sunset on the horse it rode in on. It’s not a weapon of choice for me. (Laughs) There’s something not terribly sinister about a cricket bat, do you know what I mean? “I’ll kick your ass…with a cricket bat.” You can’t say that! Plus, it’s cricket, so you’ve got to pad up and all that.

Not quite the same.

No.

You spent some time tooling around on the motorcycle in the film.

Yeah! I loved that!

What’s your history with motorcycles?

When I was a kid, I was in a band, and some of the perks of that were motorbikes. When I was recording one of my albums when I was a kid…I don’t know, 22 or so…we were in the south of France, and I used to go up the side of these mountains and along these vineyards all the time. I did this endorsement deal with Yamaha, so they sent over a load of quads and bikes to say “thank you.” I thought the fee for doing the ad campaign was enough, but they sent over some bikes to say “thanks,” and we used them to the max. There were injuries – cut faces and a bunch of other stuff – but we had a lot of fun with the bikes. I love being on a bike. I mean, I prefer being on a horse, but I like riding bikes.

Okay, now, you’ve totally played off the “I was in a band” thing, and that’s cool, but…look, I’ve got Push (by Bros) on cassette, man, so you’re not fooling anyone here.

(Bursts out laughing) Good God, man! Bloody hell, I don’t even have a copy of that! Shit! Look, y’know what it is? I think if you’re ever going to make that kind of music, you’d better do it when you’re, like, in your teenage years or your very, very early 20s, ‘cause otherwise you’ve got no excuse. I just about made it, I think. (Laughs) But where are you from, though?

I’m from America. Norfolk, Virginia.

Okay, ‘cause I think we only sold about three or four thousand units in the States. So you’re one of them, then, eh?

I am. And I’ve since upgraded the cassette to a CD, so I may even be two of them.

(Laughs) See, there’s a very big difference between American journalists and the ones in the UK, ‘cause, for example, look at, like, say, Mark Wahlberg. You can truly reinvent yourself here. You can truly do that, and what you’ve done in the past can be embraced for the fun that it is or the beginning of a career that it is. There’s nothing more sinister than the Brits. I wish they had the ability to take it all as a package or as an evolutionary thing the way the Americans do. You’re allowed to have a career progression here. So it’s kind of nice that we can talk about the film, and we can also talk about how you’ve got a CD or a cassette of Push, and…well, anyway, it’s very refreshing, man.

Actually, you brought up Mark Wahlberg, but I was going to ask you if you’d had any discussion with 50 Cent about transitioning from music to acting when you worked with him on this film.

To be honest with you, I didn’t hang out with 50 a lot. The days that we were filming, it was pretty much just him and I doing what we were doing in the film, ‘cause he’s not in it a great deal, but I was really, really impressed with Curtis’s commitment to the role. Like, we were improvising, but he definitely prepped for his time on set, and it was just really, really nice working with him. There was a definite connection there. At some point, I’d like to do a project, like maybe a two-hander, where it’s him and I doing something pretty hefty, ‘cause I really enjoyed working with him. And…I don’t mean it in a patronizing way, but he was really prepared. He was ready to go. And we had a good time.

Working with Vinnie Jones must’ve been a treat for you, given that, as a Brit, you would’ve known him as a footballer before he was an actor.

I know Vinnie anyway, ‘cause as Brits we kind of bump into each other. And I’m producing a bunch of stuff now, and he’s…not in this first one I’m doing, but probably for the next one, I’ll give Vinnie a call and say, “Hey, d’ya want to come along and come hang out with us and do some work together?” I like Vinnie a lot. He’s a good guy. I mean, as far as an intimidating dude, the kind of character he plays, I can’t think of anyone who’s better at it.

Speaking of intimidating characters, I wanted to ask you about the final battle of the film, when you’re up against the guy who’s all decked out metal warrior garb. Movie or not, it had to be daunting just standing in front of him while he’s looking like that!

Well, you know, what was more intimidating? Yes, it was, but I’ll get to that. In the screenplay…you know in the movie where they bring over the box of all that shit, and I say, “Nah, I’m old school”? That was a negotiation point for me. I was, like, “I love the story, but you’ve got as much chance of me wearing that metal warrior outfit as flying to the fucking moon.” (Laughs) I was, like, “If I can maintain a sense of cool with the character and the audience at that point, I’ve got more abilities than I think I have. But I just don’t think it’s cool for me.” But I think it’s really great in the context of the film that we see the other guy in it, because he is like a warrior. He’s huge! And also an amazingly cool guy. A really nice guy. I said, “You’re gonna help me kick your ass, is that right?” And he’s, like, “Yeah, I’ll try my best!” (Laughs) I enjoyed it. I mean, I’m glad I didn’t have to wear the outfit, but I definitely liked that scene, because it just…my biggest concern was, “Does it look feasible that I can do this?” And I think because of the wiry kind of energy that my character had and the intensity and what it’s driven by – his brother – I think anybody would believe at that point that, if you’ve got enough rage in you and you’ve got some ability, it’s feasible. My biggest concern when I looked at it back was thinking, “Please let this translate like there was a chance at victory.” And it doesn’t seem too far-fetching by the end of it. The way it’s been shot and the energy…it’s not pretty, d’you know what I mean? It’s quite blunt. But I think it does register. But he was a big guy, for sure!

So how long was Val Kilmer actually on the set? Because, you know, he’s not really in it a whole lot.

Ah, a couple of days. And, actually, that was the front end of the shoot schedule, so I was on set for a couple of days with him, off and on for a couple of little fleeting seconds here and there. But I was obviously doing a lot of stuff on this film in a very short period of time, so I was pretty much just going from set to set to set. But all in all, everybody was really cool.

I’m supposed to talk to him on Monday, so I was just curious how he was to work with.

He’s…he seemed like a polite person. I mean, obviously, you know, everyone hears the stories about him being very intense or whatever, but from my experience, he was just polite and nice. He did his work and then got out of there, but he was very pleasant when I met him. Like, just genuinely polite. It’s nice when the myth is semi-busted, you know?

So the stigma of the straight-to-video film isn’t what it used to be, but do you ever get frustrated when a film goes that route? Or are producers more up-front about their expectations for films nowadays?

Well, there’s two different kinds of movies. You’re absolutely right, and, again, it’s really refreshing to hear that the industry is changing and people don’t realize necessarily that…like, there was some guy that left something on a message board the other day, and I said, “Look, you’ve got to remember not every director has two and a half million bucks to play with, and if you love film, you have to stand up and walk the walk and not just talk it.” And I think with film, there’s a lot of filmmakers out there trying to keep the industry in great shape by just making a damned movie, as opposed to not making a movie. Absolutely people say, “What made you choose this role? What made you choose that role? What made the director choose this project instead of another?” At the end of the day, unless you’re the guys who are getting millions and millions of dollars a movie, you have to kind of say, “Do I like the story? Is it gonna be guerilla? Is it going to be crazy? Are we gonna work our asses off in the time we have? Yes. But do I want to make it? Do I want to at least try and achieve something?” So that’s what happens. You make a movie.

A prime example is “Death Race 2,” where I know that everybody had wished that was theatrical, but it was always made for the video market. As opposed to, say, some movie that doesn’t turn out so well and it finds itself a DVD release, albeit a minimal one. As opposed to a movie that understands that its distribution is gonna be DVD, but they’re gonna try and make a feature film. I think what’s happening is that there are filmmakers out there that are making feature films regardless of the medium of which it’s presented to the audience. And this is one of those. You hope that it can have a limited release, but what’s happening is that the cost of releasing is getting higher and higher, and the profits that people are making off of DVDs is dictating whether the audience gets to see them on the big screen or not.

You’re fucking right I get frustrated, but I’m an actor, I love to act, I like trying to change shape. I know I’m not stereotypical in any sense as far as playing leading roles, so…it’s just an adventure for me. And I love it when I’m in a film that comes out theatrically and does well, but at the same time, I love acting and I love making characters, so I’m not going to stop and let it be dictated. I mean, agents are always telling you, “Wait, wait, wait,” but then what do I do for a living? What, do I act sometimes? I don’t want to have that life. And sometimes you get people out there who have a release, and within a minute or two they’re making zillions of bucks, and they find themselves only in theatrically-released movies ‘cause they’re being put together by studios. I think primarily I’m an independent filmmaker, so you kind of have to somewhat lay in the bed that you make. I’m always looking for that project that’s theatrical, but it’s getting harder and harder to find it, to be honest with you.

It’s funny: knowing that I was going to be talking to you, I had pulled a quote from an interview I did with one of your former co-stars, Michael Madsen, where he said, “I believe in longevity, and I believe in doing this for as long as I can. I’ve got to take a job where I can get it. No studio is chasing me down the block. It’s a very aggressive, very competitive industry, and you’ve got to make it happen on your own or it’s not going to happen.”

Yeah, I mean, for me, I have to be lucky enough…like, I’m getting offered the front in movies quite a lot now. The next four movies I’m in, I’m the lead. And it’s not about ego. When you’re in that position, you get to roll with the director and have a creative day every single day, ‘cause you have a say in the creative process. You have a rapport with the producers. That’s why I’m producing now: ‘cause I don’t want to have to cross lines. I want to just be able to enjoy it. But the fact that I have that career…it’s like what Michael was saying, and it’s true. If you’ve got something that’s growing, are you just gonna leave it, or are you going to try to put as much into it as you can? I’m not saying it’s quantity over quality, but it is about saying, “I’m going to stand by the acting and stand by the filmmaking and not let it be dictated purely by that hunger for a theatrical release and the adulation that goes with it.” It’s bloody nice when it happens, but it can’t be the motivator. It just can’t be. Not if you want longevity, and not if you just want to be able to enjoy being an actor or being a filmmaker.

The last time I talked to you, I asked you about your favorite project that hadn’t gotten the love you thought it deserved. At the time, you said it was a toss-up between “Charlie” and “Bone Dry.” Would you still say the same, or have you done anything since then to supplant either of them?

I think still the same, yeah, probably. “Bone Dry” was one of those edgy independent movies where…well, like any of these things, it’s always a budgetary issue. A lot of the time, when the movies fall apart, it’s in the construction, the post-production stage, because there are deadlines and budgetary restraints on a lower-end film, and nine times out of ten I see kind of the result of that let a movie down in moments. And I think I can say that for “Bone Dry” and a lot of the independent films I’ve done. I think, yeah, probably those two movies are the ones that didn’t get the attention they should have done.

I’ll go ahead and start the wrapping-up process with some one-liners. First, were there really ever any serious discussions about getting Bros back together in 2008?

(Laughs) Yeah, there’s lots, man. I’ve been offered a lot of deals over the years. I mean, a lot of deals…and very lucrative ones! But it’s, like, I love making films. I started late, I’m still a big kid about it. To be honest with you, I don’t know. Who knows if the day will come where it would feel like a fun thing to do? But at the moment, with the producing and writing I’m doing and all the other stuff, and some other cool announcements are about to happen with some projects, I just want to stick with this. But, yeah, we’ve had many, many offers to do it. And they’ve been legitimate offers.

I’m sure you could go Vegas like (your brother) Matt anytime you want.

(Laughs) I think he’s got that sewn up. He loves it, he knows it, he understands it. For me, I’d rather get some fake blood all over me, get oiled up, pumped up, and kick some ass. That’s what I love!

I’ve asked you before about the experience of working with Samuel L. Jackson on “The Man,” but I never asked you what it was like to work with Eugene Levy.

I have to say, Eugene is one of those people that you just…if you could say, “I really hope he’s like this…” Like, I met Michael Caine once and had that feeling: he was exactly like I’d hoped he would be. And Eugene is exactly the same. He’s a really lovely, really generous, unbelievably modest human being. He’s just a really lovely guy. I really, thoroughly enjoyed working with him. I think if I’d have spent longer in Canada and lived up there, I’d definitely want to have stayed in touch more than we have. But he’s a lovely, lovely guy.

This may be the flip side of that coin, but…what was it like working with Steven Seagal on “Mercenary for Justice”?

Steven, um… (Hesitates) Well, again, to me, he was very, very cool. I went to his house when I got the role for that. I actually went to his house, and we had a discussion about what role I wanted to play, and I remember hearing some of his demos. But just being his house, just on a pure geek level, regardless of what people think of him, I was thinking, “Shit, I’m sitting here, hanging out with Steven Seagal in his house, talking about a new role. This is fucking cool!” (Laughs) And then we got to the set, and…I think more of the Seagal shows up when you get onto the set, but for me…I mean, it was in Africa, some of my personal team lives in Africa, so I was there and was just happy to be hanging out with my team and some of the people that I really care about, and it was done and dusted. But, yeah, there was some craziness, for sure. I can’t elaborate. (Laughs) Some of the rumors were true, I guess, but that’s as much as I can say about that. He’ll come and kick my ass if I say otherwise.

You’ve worked with David S. Goyer twice, but which came first: ““ZigZag” or ““Blade 2”?

It was “ZigZag,” actually. That was one of those evolutionary things, where it was his directorial debut, as I’m sure you know. I actually just auditioned for that. It was an out and out audition. That was my first American movie that I ever made, and I went in the audition, and I hadn’t even got back to where I was heading…I was in the car when they offered me the part! My agent called and said, “I don’t know what you did, but they just offered you the part!” It came in before I’d even made it from the audition to where I lived! So that was my first American film. And then David S. Goyer called Del Toro and said, “I think we might’ve found our Nomak.” So then I met with Del Toro, read the script feverishly, and when I met with Del Toro, it was more a case of just…he wanted to have a conversation about Nomak. ‘Cause it was so thin on the page, he didn’t want to audition. He just wanted to have a conversation, a discussion about, “Who is Nomak?” So whatever I said seemed to work, ‘cause I got offered that.

I love the fact that the call from Del Toro to offer you to the part in ““Hellboy 2” began with him saying, “Hey, motherfucker!”

(Laughs) He did! And I said, “Well, I know who this is…” I wasn’t expecting the call, because you just never know, but when I got that screenplay, that was truly, without a doubt, the easiest part I’ve ever landed. But that was with a great deal of help with Del Toro. I think at that point, it came with him standing his ground with Universal, saying, “This is the guy I want,” so I owe him greatly for that. But, obviously, now, I’ve got my own great rapport with Universal, thanks to “Death Race 2.”

I’ll close with this one: what’s the status on the film adaptation of “Magdalena”? Because I know you’d been in talks for it for quite some time, but…

Yeah, I mean, to be honest with you, I don’t know. I think it’s one of those things where…I don’t know if it was a funding issue or whatever it was, but I don’t know anything about it now. It’s one of those projects that, even with an amazing producer like Gail Ann Hurd, it just for some reason has got to a point where it’s not a discussion for me at the moment. But, again, if it happens, I’d love to do it, because it really is a great project. So we’ll see.

Can you speak to what is next for you?

Well, there’s a movie that I’m going to be shooting in Hong Kong that I’ve written and produced with a couple of names that you will most definitely know…with me being the third name! And then there’ll be an announcement about a movie that I’ll be shooting in September, I think, but I can’t say anything more about that.

I’ll keep my ears open.

Please do. Good talking to you again, man!

Hot off the success of Death Race 2, which was released on January 18 and is currerntly available on DVD, Blood Out star Luke Goss took time out of his busy schedule to chat live with his fans on his Official Forum. Below is a collection of questions answered by Luke about Death Race 2 and the upcoming anticipated release Blood Out, which costars Val Kilmer and 50 cent.

Q- So was wondering if you had your Death Race 2 spine tattoo done yet? Or if you’re still planning on it?

A – Not yet but am going to 100%, also I wanted to add to my Panther on my arm… For any artists out there, I was wondering if they would want to come up with an idea to create a sleeve for me. Want it to be much more mystical all around it… both sides of my arm.

Q – Mystical in what way?

A – Blossom tree, Mexican skull, angels faith stars, spiritual stuff, more delicate all around it like a forest of spirit, faith, mystery and love

Q – How long did it take to have the tattoos painted/stencilled on for your character Michael in Blood Out?

A – About 5 hours a day, first day was all by hand… amazing artist, but wow it was long looooong days

Q – I know how much energy you put into getting in to charactor and I was curious… in DR2 your charactor’s nickname is “Luke” did that make it harder for you to get into charactor? Did it ever pull you out of charactor?

A – Not for me, I knew it was a different Luke but I do think for some people it was strange… but strange is kinda cool in my world.

Q- I wanted to ask you Luke, what out of Blood Out or DR2 has been the most physically challenging role for you??

A – I think Blood out… it was so hard because I did all my own stunts again, but only had 16 days to shoot it, no rest for this boy eh? I always say, I’m getting older and the roles are getting younger hehehehe LOVE THAT!!!!!

Q – Luke Great job on Death Race II my kind of movie…I know you like to do as much as they will let you do but did you get to drive at all?

A – I did, and loved it, I always wanna do more, you know me! but I knew I had to get in those cars!!!

Q – How did you balance your performance in both Blood Out and Death Race II in making it both appealing as an action hero, and a dramatic, inner experience, as you have done so often and so BEAUTIFULLY?

A – Always try to make it about the human in the man… dont try to be action guy, that is in the screenplay, I get the cool stuff for free, the human is always where I go to first.

Q – Will Blood Out have a screening before it comes out on DVD? & will there be audio commentary on the DVD and w/ you on it like Hellboy 2?

A – I’m not on the commentary this time, I think there will be a screening for Blood Out… And for sure I will make sure there are some tickets for My website wenches.

Q – Would you play softer roles, like romantics or do you prefer the tougher image and what makes you choose a role?

A – I love playing romantic roles, I think it is good to mix strength and romance, then it has a sensual energy also. In “ONE NIGHT WITH THE KING” I felt very attached to that role, I missed him when the movie was done.

Q – Which car is more fun to drive, your Porsche Carrera or Luke’s Shelby GT500?

A – Porsche for sure!

Q – HELLO LUKE WANTED TOO ASK U WHAT IT LIKE WORKING WITH SEAN BEAN ON DEATH RACE 2

A – Been a fan of Sean for a long time, great actor and a real gent, wanna work with him again, gonna offer him a role in one of the movies I’m producing….. just writing a western and think there is a great part in it for him.

Q – Do you find love scenes hard (definitely NO pun intended!), or do you have a process that enables you to disassociate from the moment?

A – No, I am in the moment for sure… I always like to have some fun before with the actress, sometimes kiss in rehearsals so it is less intimidating… but it’s not hard, well, err kinda!

Q – Is there going to be a screening for Blood out in Uk Luke?

A – I heard there is a chance it will be in theaters, so there might be a premier there… hope so, fingers crossed, right!

Q – I’m a big Death Race fan and love it that you got to do DR2 … so just how fun was it driving that Mustang Shelby…cause that chase scene was awesome.

A – It was amazing! Truly such a powerful car, doing J turns and 360′s is almost kinda easy with that kind of power.

Q – Hi Luke! Which scenes in DR2 did you find the most challenging to film the fight scenes or the driving?

A – Fight scene for sure! Didn’t stop for two days and only had 45 minutes a day break. Smoke and sweat, but soooo much fun! I’m a big kid with that stuff!

Q – How have u enjoyed training with some of the UFC guys?

A – I loved it, they are tough boys… but, being a South Londoner I kept up!

Q – Hi Luke, My Niece has been wondering if you find it hard to do the naked scene in death race 2 and love scene?

A – As long as I get the chance to work out, it’s okay, feel a bit self conscious as I walk on set with all the hairy dudes filming me, but when we film, I am in the moment and don’t even think about it. Have to say, having my make up artist Meggy, put make up on my butt, takes a bit of getting used to!

Q- With there being so much amazing action in DR2, was there a time or stunt that was particularly hard to do?

A – Yes… Hanging on the roof of a car as it drives seven city blocks at 60mph… I did it about six times. After, I thought to myself, Luke, you are a nut! And then wished I could do it again!

Q – My question is “How awsome was the experience of working with Danny Trejo”?

A – Danny rocks! He’s a tough guy, but has a heart of gold. Gonna do a movie called Truck together with Roel directing again, if we can work out all our deals.

Q – What makes you choose the roles you do? What exactly do you look for in the characters you take on?

A – I look for roles that when I read, I can’t wait to play. I haven’t always been in a position to do that in my career, but now things are getting to a place where I get more choice. So, I’m hoping from now, I play only roles that make me feel excited.

Comment – Thanks for signing the dvd for the auction to raise money for the “flood victims” here in Aussie Land!

Luke – You’re so so so welcome, wow I so want to come down there again.

Q – I DO have a VERY SERIOUS question Luke!! Its been plaguing me for a long time now… Nuada vs Nomak… who would win??

A – I think it would be a crazy fight! But, I think, after a long, long fight, Nuada would win. I hate to say it, because I really care for Nomak.

io9.com’s Meredith Woerner recently spoke to Luke Goss and Danny Trejo about the great ‘prequel’ movie Death Race 2…

Death Race 2, the prequel to Jason Statham’s Death Race reboot, is on DVD. We chatted up two of the movie’s stars, Danny Trejo and Luke Goss, and they promised the new movie will crank the insanity up to maximum.

Luke Goss:

There’s David Carradine’s Frankenstein, there’s Jason Statham’s Frankenstein and then there’s your Frank — also called Luke. Where does he fit in with the proud legacy of Death Race drivers?

Frankenstein becomes a commodity on the prison of Terminal Island and on the TV show [Death Race]. Frankenstein is the star. But before Luke becomes Frankenstein, he’s working for Sean Bean’s character, Marcus, and he has a criminal record. But he didn’t kill anyone or anything like that. He prides himself on his morals, and he’s asked to compromise his ethics for a second and he pays a very big price for that [and is sentenced to Terminal Island]. It’s about the evolution of the original Frankenstein [in the new rebooted series pre-Staham]. But I think I’m doing more of a Carradine role than a Statham.

Everyone wants to know what line will top Joan Allen’s amazing “shit on the sidewalk” line from the last Death Race?

One of the lines I actually love is from Ving [Rhames]. I don’t want to ruin it… He delivers this line while one of the characters is kind of a mess on the floor… and he says something like “that’s a dumb bitch.” When the audience they saw it, they loved it. It’s the way he delivers it.

You guys used all the original cars from the Statham film, right?

We did. There’s kind of a misconception, I had nothing to do with calling it Death Race 2. I do believe that it would be better if it was called Frankenstein Begins, or something like that because it is a prequel. But yes, the cars are in it, they are the stars too. It was a deliberate choice, I know that some of them had been sold, so the producers had to track them down and bring them back. They’re pretty heavy, but the car I was driving is a beast. It sounds bloody gorgeous and it’s bloody fast. The Shelby Super Snake (it’s the yellowy one) — nothing touches it as far as speed and power. But the cars on the track they’re pretty brutal.

Did you do a lot of your own driving?

I did a lot — shit-loads of driving — in this film. I did all of the fighting too. I made sure, being a huge Steve McQueen fan so I wanted to make sure I had lots of footage in the car with the camera through the windshield with me, so people would know that I’m doing it. It’s easy to buy into the story when you know the person is actually doing it. So I did get to do some of the stunts.

How would you fix up your own car for Death Race?

Would I use my own car? [Laughs] I don’t know it’s quite shiny I think it would get a bit beaten up and dented. I’d have to put a lot of guns on it, or I’d be screwed. I drive a Porsche Carrera 4S. I think it’s cool, but I don’t know realistic it would be. But my own car, no I want to keep it shiny [Laughs].

If Death Race was a real TV show, would you watch it?

No. Statham’s version was poking fun at the extreme media, but it’s also cautionary. I would definitely not watch it. I guess that’s the fun part of movies you can make a cautionary message.

DANNY TREJO

What’s it like being the new pit boss for Death Race

I love this movie, it’s wall-to-wall action. I hate movies with lulls in it, we don’t have any lulls in this film. We have the three ‘B’s in this movie: babes, bullets and blood.

If Death Race was a real TV show, would you watch it?

Oh yeah, are you kidding me? That’s great! You know, I mean, the Indianapolis 500? If they put guns on the car, it would be Death Race. It’s a dangerous race.

Would you enter your own car in the Death Race?

I drive a Range Rover sport with 24 inch tires, everything is chrome, special cherry. It’s more a lowrider than anything. I’m not really a race guy. All of my cars are low, cherried out, beautiful paint and they bounce. I have a 1936 Dodge Touring Sedan, it’s just beyond me. It’s original — we just lowered it, put pipes on it and put a sound system in it.

Predators, grindhouse films, Death Race 2, Fallout — you have a huge collection of scifi flicks. Does that genre speak to you? And what’s next?

I just love action. I’m not the guy to go on a date and go to a drama. We’ll go see Heat. Well I’m doing the Muppets Movie next [Laughs], I hope they cast me as the grumpy old men hecklers. (But I haven’t filmed yet).

Death Race 2 is out on DVD and Blu-Ray now.

Nice interview from MotorTrend.com

Quick Stats: Luke Goss, actor
Daily Driver: 2008 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S (Luke’s rating: 10 on a scale of 1 to 10)
Other car: 2009 Range Rover (rating: 10)
Car he learned to drive in: 1980s Ford Granada
First car bought: 1981 Datsun Cherry

The opening sequence in “Death Race 2″ features Luke Goss’ character piloting a Shelby GT500 Super Snake in a good old-fashioned, high-octane car chase that is thrilling to watch. It was even more exhilarating for Goss, a true car enthusiast and Porsche aficionado. Hr got to do most of his own driving in this movie, including a once-in-a-lifetime chance to race down a highway in Cape Town, South Africa, that was shut down for five hours.

“For a boy or girl, driving cars that they love is fun,” Goss said in a in a posh hotel room in Beverly Hills recently, where “Death Race 2″ cast members including Ving Rhames, Sean Bean and Danny Trejo, were gathered to promote the movie, which comes out on DVD January 18. “Driving them on a freeway that’s been shut down, being tracked by helicopters and camera vehicles, you’re bobbing and weaving in between these vehicles with two or three million dollars’ worth of cameras strapped to the half-a-million-dollar car you’re driving — no pressure,” he says with smile. “But bloody hell it was a lot of fun. I loved it.”

Goss had never driven the six-speed manual 750 hp supercharged Shelby before. For the scene, the traction control and ABS were turned off. “It was really amazing. And because the car is so unique, the executives were like ‘If you scratch this car, I will get fired.’ That is a monster. That was a street-legal vehicle, a very expensive one.”
He got to do 15 to 20 takes, and each time he took slightly different lines. The scene was dramatic in real life because the other drivers didn’t know what lines Goss would take.
