How do you prepare for a role while getting over jet lag & adjusting to new environment?

Luke: Getting used to a new town or city especially with jet lag is tough. But like all things with acting you can use it. The first few days are always a bit unsettling, but with my ipod and the screenplay I just tell myself I have been here for weeks, I always get deeper into the character at that stage of the projects. It is a good confusion that helps the character become a priority.

What is it like being the 4th in a dynamo cast on Exodus?

Luke: I was happy to be there….hit the ground running but once we got started if felt very organic and a great set to be on, mainly because the director “r.ellis frazier” was bloody cool and had a sense of calm and trust about him. he allowed the actors to really invent and care about the project.

Any funny stories you can share with us that happen in Mexico or Baton Rogue film set?

Luke: When I was filming Blood Out, I was doing a scene on the Harley Davidson, it was night, and raining so hard. There was a police car escorting the scene, then a crew van and the camera vehicle and finally me. I was being filmed riding the bike, all three vehicle in front of me ran the red light because we had police officers with us. I didn’t run it because I wanted to stay alive and not get hit by cross traffic. I am at the lights wet and covered in tattoos without a crash helmet when 2 police cars pull up to me open the doors guns at the ready, i shouted, “I’m making a F’ing movie” I thought, after all the crazy things I’ve done, please don’t let me get shot for pretending to be in a gang! Another police car come screaming to a halt, thankfully it was our escort vehicle he shouted, “there making a movie!” the other officer relaxed with the gun and the search lights and said, “yeah I guess I can see that!” next time I will ask if they can put it over the radios, might save the confusion, and my beating heart from exploding.

How did you move from singing into acting?

15 years ago, when I left the band, I got into theatre …really unexpectedly and I just erm, fell in love with it. I mean literally the very first show I did, I ended up doing over 1500 performances. At the very first day in The Queens Theatre I saw a lot of the casting and the process and how cool they were and it was a lot more informal and way more supportive than the music industry, where you’re kinda like an island! Your way more accessible, kinda embracing each other and making it work and I just fell in love with the process and found my home, I mean I was only 23-24 years old and I thought “this is it”.

Then I did this movie called “Zigzag” with Wesley Snipes and the writer and director of that movie, was the writer of ‘Blade’ and introduced me the Del Toro, who’s now become a dear friend and definitely supported me.

… I’ve literally just finished another leading role in a movie called “Blood Out”, with 50 Cent and Val Kilmer. I play a Cop who’s brother gets killed and the people/cops investigating his death, his murder, don’t really give a f*ck as he’s a gangbanger. They (the cops) think he’s “just another piece of sh*t of the street” basically. That cop (the one investigating), played by 50 Cent, doesn’t want to investigate the murder, he doesn’t really care. So I go under deep cover
to find out who is behind it & basically Vinnie Jones, who is one of the thugs that work for Val Kilmer is behind the murder. I mean it’s really cool & it’s I good story. I basically got to try and solve my brother’s murder and revenge his death & all that stuff.

I’ve just done “Death Race 2″ which went really well. I play the main character in that, which is cool and that was with ‘Universal Studios’, who still have the
franchise and I just took it over.

What did you have to train for the role (Death Race 2)?

I mean, a lot of them I have to train for. For this last one (Blood Out) I had to have S.W.A.T training and for this one I had to do a lot of ‘Hand-to-hand” combat with the stunt co-ordinators. I mean I love all that stuff! Kung Fu, swords, hand-to-hand … when I did Blade, I trained intensively for 10 weeks for that and you just keep learning & one discipline kinda helps with the next, then the next helps with the next and so on, with the fluidity and just learning how to “Screen Fight”.

Yeah, I mean it’s kind of a buzz, martial arts and people that haven’t done martial arts don’t really understand!

Martial arts is really calming. The more you do and the more capable you get, the less you feel aggressive and it just stabilizes anyone that does it. I mean, you obviously just get the nuts out there, that just want to “kick ass”. There is something really centering about it. You know , it’s about fluidity & there is also a spiritual element to a lot of these disciplines. Most of the people that teach me, really can do it, I just make it look good on screen, but they can really do it.

What about your martial arts background, I mean for Blade you really sold the role. So do you have a martial arts background?

I don’t actually! I did like 3 years of Karate when I was a kid, like everyone of us!

Yeah!

But to be honest with you, when you’re training for those types of movies, the budget is there! I was training 6 or 7 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, 10 weeks before I even got anywhere near photography, you know, as far as principle photography on the film. With ‘Hellboy’ I was there in Budapest for 10 weeks before I did any principle photography on that as well. It’s just every day, you get up knowing you’ve got fight training everyday!

What training did you have to do, for the role in Hellboy? What were some of the styles that you did?

Well …mostly we do a lot of Boxing, just for good stamina as there is nothing quite like it. We did some sparring with these foam sword that they had, these tubes, that still kinda give you a little whack, but they’re good for sparring and also fluidity. But really swords and spears. We had the guy from 300, guy called Max White who was my sword master to teach me how to use a sword, then we had a guy called Pung who was helping me with the Staff (round wooden stick or can also be a spear), which was ridiculously difficult, that was unbelievably hard. But I loved using the sword, it was so much fun and Max who is an amazing teacher, he just wants you to excel.

So we would do 4-5 hours of that and then couple of hours off, then we would do 1 hour in the gym and then dinner.

What is your normal fitness regime?

I just pretty much train every day, I like to stay ‘semi -movie ready’, but you can’t stay “movie ready” as you need to get in such ridiculous shape for some of these parts. I mean I don’t get a lot of ‘down time’ in-between roles …I mean I leave for Mexico today to do this movie with Andy Garcia & Aidan Quinn. I play an assassin …just it’s no shirt in the scenes, so there will definitely be some beer drinking down in Tiawana.

To be honest with you, you gotta stay semi-ready, so when you do have to step it up you can. I do have a regime of weights, always before cardio.
Stay off the Carbs! Eat loads of vegetables and avoid fruits and juices and stuff.

And lean meats etc?

To be honest with you, I don’t worry too much about the “lean meats”. You know that one thing I found is if you get too pedantic about it you know, you get tired and fatigued. I think it’s the case of “If you working hard enough and the calories are getting burnt and getting strong enough, then it kinda takes care of itself”, within reason! I mean for something like Hellboy, I had to be pedantic about it as I needed to strip everything off and get an “8-pack”.

hahaha, yeah I totally understand that, as I’m very into fitness myself and know what you have to go through, the sort of weight you lose!

I had to try and specifically had to stay strong looking, but also be really, really thin because of the character. Which was really, really tough, because normally when you pushing and your trying to gain weight, trying to get a little chunky, but when you’re trying to lose weight at the same time, it gets kinda contradicting.

PART 2

So what about your eating habits. How many times do you eat a day? Do you have specific eating times? Do you eat 7 times a day?

I know people say “frequently and not large amounts”, but that doesn’t work for me. My training is really cool, my trainer here in L.A always says that “You’ve got to kind of work, with what works for your body”. I don’t have a huge appetite and I like to eat a big dinner, I hate tiny little meals. By the third tiny meal, I’m literally forcing myself to eat it and it makes me feel bloody horrible so I don’t do that. So I eat 3 meals, I eat lots of bananas in between so there is something going in all the time which just helps to stop the metabolism from crashing.

Obviously you can’t walk on set or an interview looking like your dead! I think the best approach is to create a regime that is really do-able in your life you know! You can pretty much have everything, but don’t eat Carbs after like 1pm, I mean there are certain restrictions…

Having the right Carbs as well, like sweet potatoes etc.

Yeah, you know, I like little bit of rice.

I have to be honest I don’t like eating brown rice, I’m a basmati fan!

…and shit loads of vodka at night that helps hahah

That always helps haha.

Do you take any supplements?

I do actually. I take vitamins and a few other thing like ‘Bee-pollen’. Royal Jelly and Ginseng when I’m training hard. I take L-Carnitine and erm …Creatine, the one you don’t have to stack. I take a bunch of stuff when I’m training …and eat sh*tloads of chicken haha!

Haha, ok I gotta ask … leg or breast?

Haha, I like the dark meat, the breast just makes me feel like….. It’s good to be in shape but I don’t want to be miserable. I mean in fitness people are always recommending “this” or “that” and I think it’s really about doing something that you can sustain! And still have fun and still be alive, have slightly less ‘Tone’, so your gonna look healthier anyway!

So do you have any vices?

Vodka.

Have you tried the Mango Vodka’s etc?

I can’t stand “Infused Vodka’s”. They give me a stupid head ache. The sugar in them… Sugar and alcohol don’t really agree with me, unless it’s with Absinthe!

haha, then it’s going to be one messy night!

Just a bit, you can imagine!

So apart from vodka, what other vices do you have?

You know I don’t smoke, I’ve never done drugs in my life. I smoked some weed for like a minute as a kid. I like to have a glass of vodka or champagne or wine with my buddies or my missus, but to be honest with you, all that stuff scares the sh*t outta me. I’ve smoked with characters (in movies) but I don’t inhale. I just like having a drink every now and again!

So apart from movies, have you got any other plans in the future?

I might be involve with erm …my step daughter Carli has a company called “Stamina for Sale” (shesgotstaminaforsale.co.uk) and she has this ethos that we believe that fitness should be about spiritual as well as physical, I mean fitness isn’t just about looking good, it’s the whole thing! So she has just started this range and I’m trying to support that for her. I have always had a plans to open a restaurant for sure, but erm at the moment I’m just busy with my acting and I’ve got my own production company at Universal Studios and producing 3 movies right now called “Your Move, “The Shineye Heist” & one that is shooting in South Africa is called “Eyes of the King”.

Can you give us a little sneak peek for these movies?

“Your Move” is a really, really intense thriller about an obsessed fan, who believes that my characters wife is his women and it’s a very complex story, he basically accosts my family and I have to try and save there lives! It’s really intense and really disturbing. “The Shineye Heist” is a funny/Robin Hood movie about 2 jewel thieves that have never work with anybody, always work on their own and they are offered a job where they have to work together. I wrote the other 2, but “Eyes of the King” I didn’t write.

What advice would you give our readers?

I do believe in fitness as a combination of having a fit mindset, fit body and a fit lifestyle. I think it is realising that we are here one time! So if your feel unhealthy or you’re carrying a weight that aren’t good for you and makes you feel sluggish, then you leave the house not feeling as confident. You run up the stairs feeling out of breathe …probably if you can reverse that and be able to run up the stairs and put on some jeans and feel good. That then kinda translates to how you present yourself to other people. But my point is, healthy living is good! I think obsession with anything, even with fitness is not cool, it doesn’t work. It’ s about finding something that works for you. I would say rather than saying things that you can’t have, I would say fit it into your regime, with your income and your life, that is best for you. Some people are gonna have time and money to do it absolutely perfectly and others may not.

Some people might only have 2 opportunities in the week to do it, then take those opportunities to do it as you’re going to feel good on every level …And still have a good life!

‘Exodus’

Looks like Luke’s next movie will be south of the border. THR has revealed Luke’s fellow actors will be Andy Garcia, Mario Van Peebles, and Aidan Quinn. Exodus starts filming next week in Mexico and LA. R. Ellis Frazier has written the screenplay and will direct and produce the film.

Charlie (Quinn) is a billionaire who loses himself in paradise after it is revealed in LA his money was gained in a Ponzi-like scheme. While in his exiled state, Charlie decides to look for a lost love he left in Tijuana, Mexico 25 years earlier. While on his hunt he comes across three dangerous men who are hunting him; a Mexican gangster (Garcia), a federal agent (Van Peebles) sent to bring Charlie back to USA, and (Luke), who is hired by the victims of the Ponzi scheme to retrieve their money from Charlie…by any means necessary.

It looks set to be an explosive and action-packed film, with a wonderful all-star cast!

Besides having a fabulous director, Pearry Teo, keeping our Luke’s wenches all riled up with pictures from the set of Witchville; which did not help with our rapid heart beat. Sneak peeks from other sources have us staring at the clock, waiting for tomorrow night to arrive to see the long awaited SyFy Movie starring Luke Goss as King Malachy, which was filmed in China.

Malachy is told he is now the crowned King of his father’s Kingdom after arriving home from a long crusade. As King Malachy comes to terms with his father’s sudden death and the decay of the kingdom, he is faced with an unforeseen evil that tries to undo his accomplishments to put his kingdom to right. Finally a showdown between good and evil ensues, as King Malachy fights for his people and his kingdom.

We are sure to see Luke Goss’s skills with a sword again, as in past movies; Hellboy II & One Night with King to name just a few. Luke is a lifelong equestrian and his fighting skills alone are worth watching, plus his acting is a bonus on top of all the visuals we will be fortunate to see in Witchville. This is one movie for which I will be curled up on my couch with my white wine and popcorn, ready and waiting to see it!

Luke Goss named Ultimate Badass for The Dead Undead

LUKE GOSS, star of Hellboy II (as Prince Nuada) and Blade II (as Jared Nomak), has just landed an award at newly-launched sci-fi and horror film festival, the Polly Staffle Grindhouse Fest, (known informally as PollyGrind), which recently took place in Las Vegas. This time he received the award for his role as Jack, the vampire commando in horror flick The Dead Undead.

Luke won Markowitz the Amazing Thug Armadillo’s Ultimate Badass Award at the new fest, which is dedicated to horror, sci-fi, exploitation and arthouse films. A full rundown of all the winners was released today and is included in full below.

The movie “The Dead Undead”, released in the USA a year ago, centres on a fighting force made up of vampires who are trying to stop the spread of a plague of vampire zombies. The Vampires live quietly in a small community, committed to only feeding from cows. A few Vampires are poisoned by a virus from a cow which turns them into killing Zombie Vampires. Jack (Luke Goss) is the commander of a secret elite fighting Vampire group, determined to keep the spread of this plague contained. Caught in the middle of the battle between the two fanged forces is a group of human kids on a camping trip. Written by Edward Conan and Directed by Matthew R. Anderson & Edward Conna who both also starred in movie alongside America Young and Lance Frank.

The two big winners at the festival were Slime City Massacre, a sequel to a gruesome classic from more than twenty years ago, and Dead Hooker In A Trunk, a debut feature from twin sisters that started as a faux trailer.

Greg Lamberson’s Slime City Massacre won The Biggest Baddest Mother of the PollyGrind, the top jury award, while Jen and Sylvia Soska’s Dead Hooker in a Trunk was voted favourite feature by the audience.

Lamberson said: “I’m thrilled Slime City Massacre won this honour and happily accept it on behalf of everyone who worked on it.

“Some genre-themed film festivals cater more and more to studio films, but the PollyGrind really is a celebration of independent films .

“That’s what festivals should be about: exposing people to films that might escape their radar otherwise, not scheduling the same stuff that will be in multiplexes a few months later. I’m proud to have screened at a new festival that has its priorities straight, and the award is very sweet icing on the cake.”

“I was extremely pleased with the quality of all the content I got to program for my startup event,” PollyGrind creator Chad Clinton Freeman said. “But Dead Hooker in a Trunk and Slime City Massacre offer so much that it’s hard for people not to like at least some aspect of them. They’re funny, sexy, absurd and filled with girls, guns and gore just like many of the grindhouse greats.”

“The event was a success in every way I could have hoped for,” added Freeman. “This was put on in the same spirit as old grindhouse cinema with no budget whatsoever and the horror and indie film communities, as well as genre fans, the Vegas art scene and the media really did their part in supporting us. It definitely was a great start to an annual event.”

Freeman says the next PollyGrind is scheduled for May 11-15, 2011.

“The first PollyGrind was pulled off with less than five months of preparations,” he said. “So with a full year to plan, promote and develop, I think next year’s is going to really be something.”
